KYVE v1.5 Upgrade: Multi-Coin Funding & Protocol Optimization

As KYVE continues to extend its data solutions to new ecosystems, more use cases and user opportunities arise. As a positive step in our journey to revolutionize decentralized data management and accessibility, KYVE has upgraded to v1.5, enabling multi-coin funding, protocol optimization, and more.

This upgrade has unlocked a new era for KYVE, enabling an even more collaborative experience for partner ecosystems and laying down a strong foundation to make the web app the hub for all things KYVE. Let’s get into the details…

TL;DR:

- Multi-coin funding: an exciting addition to the protocol economics, enabling the funding of integrations in any token;
- The protocol is further optimized to best support ecosystems with large amounts of data;
-KYVE chain successfully upgraded to Cosmos v0.50 & IBC v8.3.1.

Introducing Multi-Coin Funding

KYVE’s protocol integrations mainly rely on funding, which pays well-behaved validators and their delegators within each data pool (integration), incentivizing them to secure, archive, and validate historical Web3 data.

Over 1.8M $KYVE has been funded into the protocol, which enabled the validation and archiving of more than 6TB of historical data from chains like Cosmos Hub, Cronos, Celestia, and others.

Funders (those who fund the protocol data pools) will likely be blockchains or their foundations, validator teams, and other data users heavily reliant on KYVE’s data pools and tools. Since KYVE’s launch, integrations have been primarily funded by the KYVE Foundation.

To improve the funding experience and enable a more collaborative experience, v1.5 has introduced a new feature to KYVE tokenomics: multi-coin funding. As it sounds, this allows data pools to be funded in $KYVE and other tokens, enabling other projects to fund their integrations on KYVE with their own tokens.

--> It’s important to note that while this feature is now enabled, tokens from other chains are not yet live on the protocol. Tokens will be added as KYVE’s Public Goods Funding initiative progresses.

KYVE’s Public Goods Funding initiative is the first to utilize this new feature. This is where KYVE runs public good validators on partner chains to generate rewards in their tokens, which are then used to fund their data pool integration. Currently, KYVE is already running on Andromeda and SOURCE protocol, aiming to support the funding of their upcoming mainnet integrations. Stay tuned for more news on this program.

Multi-coin funding is a major addition to the protocol economics, not only bringing new opportunities for our users and ecosystem collaborations but also adding new utility to the $KYVE token. $KYVE will still remain the token used for delegation on the chain and protocol layers, and in the near future, validators will also leverage it to pay for data storage (yes, that’s in the works!).

Protocol Optimization

To provide larger, data-heavy projects and ecosystems with faster integration times, KYVE’s v1.5 has enabled multiple new features to further optimize the integration process. This includes improving bundle speeds, faster recovery for timeout bundles, and bundle finalization on missing bundles.

Additionally, v1.5 introduces End Keys for data pools, which allow pools to stop once a specific block is reached. This feature enables the creation of multiple data pools in parallel, each dedicated to validating and archiving distinct chunks of data from the same blockchain. As a result, archiving and validation times are cut down when integrating large-scale blockchains.

For instance, if KYVE were to integrate Solana, which can produce up to 4 petabytes of data per year, KYVE can release multiple data pools simultaneously: one data pool from block one to block 1,000,000, another data pool from block 1,000,000 to block 2,000,000, and so forth until reaching the live height, creating a parallel integration approach.

Finally, the upgrade also introduced a StorageCost per StorageProvider feature, enhancing storage cost management with dynamic pricing for each provider. This allows further customization of storage costs when more storage providers are added to the protocol. For example, if Filecoin support is added, the storage cost will be different from that of Arweave.

Web App Updates

The KYVE web app has always been heavily focused on the validator and developer experience, making it quite a technical interface to interact with. To best open KYVE up to all types of users, the protocol web app has been reorganized, putting day-to-day users at the center of it all.

To keep web app users updated, there is also a new “Newsfeed” tab that can direct users to the latest articles and announcements from the ecosystem.

In the coming weeks, KYVE aims to implement more features, such as an auto-compound claim and re-staking feature, an in-app guide for staking, and more, to further streamline the new user onboarding experience.

Infrastructure: Cosmos v0.50 & IBC v8.3.1

KYVE has also successfully upgraded to the latest Cosmos SDK version v50, incorporating key enhancements and maintaining alignment with the latest standards. This upgrade introduces governance improvements such as expedited proposals as well as greater modularization.

Additionally, extensive code refactoring has improved overall performance and reliability. With Cosmos SDK version v51 set to discontinue support for v47, this upgrade ensures continued compatibility and access to the latest features.

KYVE’s v1.5 also includes IBC v8.3.1, a few bug fixes, and smaller optimizations, which you can find in the full changelog here.

V1.5’s Impact Looking Forward

With v1.5, KYVE is able to make significant strides in facilitating its expansion, enhancing accessibility and efficiency across the platform, and streamlining the onboarding process for new integrations.

These improvements are designed to foster innovation and collaboration with and around KYVE, paving the way for impactful initiatives like the Public Goods Funding, the KYVE Grants Program, and much more. Stay tuned for in-depth demos and updates about upcoming features.
